Myrtle Beach was just ranked #1 in Best Affordable Spring Break Destinations by US News & World Report.  Affordable golf, shopping, 60 miles of beaches and a short drive for East Coasters are just some of the indicators used to name Myrtle Beach #1 in Inexpensive Spring Break Destinations by U.S. News & World Report for the second year in a row. The ranking is based on expert analysis as well as user opinions.

“As the Myrtle Beach area continues to welcome more new visitors, year after year, we are confident we will continue to see rankings like these,” said Brad Dean, President and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. “With a growing arts and culture scene, a rising culinary scene, new and improved attractions and entertainment options, not to mention new nonstop air service from many airline partners providing greater access for new visitors, there’s no doubt that these rankings will continue to include the Myrtle Beach area. This means new jobs and a growing local economy and that’s good news for all of us.”

By April, most of the Spring Break crowd has returned north, the average air temperature is pushing 80 and while the water temperature isn’t yet bathwater warm, it’s pleasant enough to be in the water. It’s one of the best times of year to visit Myrtle Beach.

The sales executives at The Trembley Group Real Estate in Myrtle Beach are excited about the area’s arts and culture, athletic events, arts and crafts festivals, and nature and outdoor activity. THE MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS

What better family fun for an April evening than a baseball game? The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are a  Minor League Baseball Minor League Baseball team located in Myrtle Beach Myrtle Beach. They are a Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The Pelicans are members of the Carolina League and most recently won the league’s championship in 2016. Their ballpark is TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark, which is a family-friendly stadium with a speed pitch, obstacle course, and moon bounce on the concourse.  Baseball America has rated it the second-best Class-A level ballpark in the United States, and the best in the Carolina League.  The stadium opened in 1999 and seats up to 6,599 fans.

For family fun, tickets are inexpensive, there are lots of special promotions, and there are eleven home games in April. A family of four can get tickets, eat their fill of hotdogs, and spend a fun-filled evening for a fraction of the cost of an evening at a major-league park. Tickets can be purchased online or at the park.

BIRDS OF PREY DAY – APRIL 1

Huntington Beach State Park, between Murrells Inlet SC and Pawleys Island SC, is considered by many to be the most beautiful of South Carolina’s state parks. A clean, pristine, white Grand Strand beach is what most remember about the park and is what bring many visitors back, year after year. They revel in sea-breeze camping and the finest surf fishing South Carolina has to offer.

There are also South Carolina landmarks such as Atalaya, the picturesque, Moorish-style winter home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, philanthropist and sculptor, respectively, who left the park and adjacent Brookgreen Gardens as their legacy.

Art lovers flock by the thousands to the prestigious, juried Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival held each September in and around Atalaya, the former home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington.

Nature lovers also enjoy the park’s wide variety of programming, including the chance to see loggerhead turtles and other endangered plant and animal species up close. The park’s freshwater lake is a certain place to see alligators and sometimes even an otter or a mink or two.

Huntington Beach State Park offers some of the top bird-watching on the East Coast where herons, egrets, storks, pelicans and spoonbills are commonly seen. On April 1, enjoy a day of bird themed programs including owl pellet dissections, bird nature crafts, a birding walk, and more at South Carolina’s #1 birding destination! Visitors may even see the park’s resident bald eagles. They should be about ready to fledge their chicks and are frequently spotted from the marsh boardwalk or the causeway at the park’s entrance. Another highlight of the day will be a free-flight live raptor demonstration by the Center for Birds of Prey at 1:00 pm on the lawn next to Atalaya.

DON’T MISS THE SECOND ANNUAL HORRY COUNTY FAIR – APRIL 7 – 16

It’s the 2nd Annual Horry County Fair at Myrtle Beach Speedway April 7th – 16th, 2017. After an enormously successful inaugural Horry County Fair at Myrtle Beach Speedway in 2016, the second edition is shaping up to be bigger and better. There’ll be something for everyone at The Fair! Petting zoo, butterfly exhibit, rides, racing pigs, food, games, and more! The speedway’s 48-acre complex will be alive with typical county fair activities – food, games, rides, bands, comedy, dancing, a beauty pageant, and agricultural exhibits. It will also provide visitors with a broad view of everything Horry County offers thanks to the wide variety of local companies with exhibits on the midway. ART IN THE PARK – APRIL 15 – 16 & APRIL 22 – 23

Myrtle Beach cultural arts embody events such as Gullah lessons (Gullah is a language spoken by slave descendants) and Gullah songs and stories. Myrtle Beach museums tell the history of the Grand Strand through exhibits of yesteryear. Many Myrtle Beach art galleries feature both well-known and local artists. Myrtle Beach art festivals are another cultural aspect of the area. Local festivals feature the work of a wide variety of artisans and craftsmen.

In the late 1960s, a small group of artists formed the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild. About 1970, they created Art in the Park. Art was hung from trees and leaned against cars. Today, a typical Art in the Park will feature 40 artists from North and South Carolina and Georgia but also artists from as far as California, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Featured art will includes woodworking, photography, jewelry, fabric, glass, metal, pottery and stone. The festival turns away a lot of musicians, authors, food products and bath and body artisans. It is an old-fashioned art guild trying to limit their exhibits to typical two and three dimensional art.

The shows don’t solicit artists and most find the shows by word of mouth. The customers find the shows by reputation. The shows are run by artists for artists. Many visitors plan their trips to the area so that they won’t miss the Art in the Park.

MYRTLE BEACH SPRING SHAG DANCING SAFARI – APRIL 21 – 30

The Society of Stranders (SOS) is an organization that promotes the dance, the lifestyle, and the music of shag. Carolina Shag is a descendant of Carolina Jitterbug that originated in Myrtle Beach. It’s a dance and a way of life that thousands enjoy.

Each year at the end of April (April 21 – 30 this year), spring is celebrated by thousands of shaggers from all along the east coast. They meet in North Myrtle Beach for the annual SOS Spring Safari.

The ten-day event has been called the biggest adult party on the East Coast. A wide variety of activities is scheduled for the event. Popular bands show up along Main Street playing crowd favorites. Shag dance instructors offer classes to anyone interested in improving their skill.

But the big attraction is the nightlife. The nights are spent shag dancing to timeless music that moves the soul.

The last Saturday of the event culminates on Main Street for the ACSC Club’s Parade. ACSC member clubs plan, design,  and build parade floats for fun and a chance to win one of the coveted awards. There are award categories for best shag theme and most original float. The Spring Safari Parade always draws a huge crowd of shaggers and locals.
