Few people are as passionate about an avocation as Harley riders. It seems to be essential to their happiness. They love nothing more than to hear their engines rev as they pull out of their driveway to start a day’s journey. For many of these folks, Myrtle Beach Bike Week is one of the highlights of the year. They love the hair do’s created by their Harley and even the bugs in their teeth. (Yes, that really happens.) But the joy comes from more than just riding. It comes from coming together with people who share their passion. Some have made forever-friends from all over the country. All it takes is two wheels to become friends forever.

This motorcycle passion carries over into the lives and families of bikers, creating a true lifestyle. Bikers travel far and wide to show off their pride and joy and enjoy the company of fellow riders at rallies all over the country and world. Rallies are more popular than ever, with some dating back more than 70 years.

Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson Spring Bike Week is the longest continuous running motorcycle rally in America; even longer than Sturgis and Laconia. Established in 1940, it started with a few motorcycles, a bonfire, and a hot dog roast on a beach near North Myrtle Beach. The passion caught on and the rally grew from those few motorcycles to hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiast that visit Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand every year today.  

Every year, Myrtle Beach Bike Week Spring Rally features bike shows, vendors, tours and more around the Grand Strand. Riders enjoy day trips to Charleston and Wilmington, N.C. All along the Grand Strand, there are plenty of parties, concerts, biker games, and burnout pits along the established loops, but there’s also time for taking in all the attractions, dining, shopping and nightlife the Grand Strand has to offer while enjoying some quality bike time.

During Bike Week, any Harley Davidson location is a hot-spot along with the usual hangouts like Jamin’ Leather, Beaver Bar, the Rat Hole, Suck Bang Blow, Myrtle Beach Speedway, Ocean Annie’s Beach Bar and many others. There’s also a Loop Tour that’s nearly 200 miles through Horry and Georgetown Counties.

For a true motorcycle lover, there’s nothing like the rush of the open road. Whether fueled simply by the open air or the thundering rumble of the engine beneath them, bikers are a proud and enthusiastic group of people who like to gather at biker rallies like Bike Week at Myrtle Beach. But for most of Bike Week’s participants, the week is a time to gather and meet like-minded fanatics that eventually become part of their extended families. It is the love and passion for cycling that keeps them rolling back to Myrtle Beach every year. It’s all about the Journey ~ Not the Destination!

NASCAR Racing

Myrtle Beach Speedway — originally called Rambi Raceway — was built in 1958. The track is a 0.538-mile oval with 13 degrees of banking in the corners and nine degrees on the straightaways. Myrtle Beach Speedway last hosted a major NASCAR event in 2000, when the Busch (now Xfinity) Series raced here. Currently, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series headlines weekly racing activity at the track. The track is home to Late Model Stock Car racing’s prestigious Myrtle Beach 400.

Three generations of Earnhardts have competed at Myrtle beach, along with all four generations of Pettys. Jeff Gordon has also competed at Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach Speedway continues to serve as a spot for grassroots racing. “It’s like baseball having minor leagues,” says Myrtle Beach Speedway’s General Manager Steve Zacharias “The local guys have a part in it and they put so much effort in day in and day out personally. It’s their cars, it’s their passion, the whole thing. It’s really cool to be a part of it.”

The SOS Spring Safari

The “Carolina Shag” is said to have been born along the Grand Strand near Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach. The basic step for this upbeat, quick, and smooth dance is a six-count, eight-step pattern danced in a slot. The dance originated in the African American community in the late 1930s and rose in popularity among a broader audience in the 1940s when interest peaked in the “beach music” that accompanied it.

The Shag, specifically the Carolina Shag, has been called the “swing dance of the South” and lives in a class of its own. It has been described as a “cold beer on a warm night with a hot date and no plans for tomorrow.” It’s often linked to the term “swing dancing,” though the two dances really shouldn’t be lumped into the same category.

One thing that makes the Shag such a popular dance is that anyone can do it – it doesn’t matter whether a dancer is six years old or 96 years old. It breaks barriers and unites people together with a single common purpose: to have fun and enjoy the music. Dino Thompson, author of Boogie Woogie Beats and one of South Carolina’s original Shaggers, explains that it was the music that changed everything for the young dancers back in the day. “The sheer power of the emotional appeal of music brought the races together. Black and white, rich and poor, jumped the rope and came down from the balconies to share the music and a memory.” All that mattered was the dance floor, and this school of thought still rings true for dancers today.

Each year at the end of April, spring is celebrated by thousands of shaggers from all along the east coast. They hit the road in search of the party life. Their destination is the famous little strip of sand known as the Grand Strand. After the long winter, shaggers are eager for the first outing of the summer and find it at the SOS Spring Safari.

For 10 days the biggest adult party on the East Coast crashes into North Myrtle Beach like an ocean wave. A variety of activities are scheduled for the event. Many member clubs of the ACSC will schedule “tea parties” in the local lounges. The lounges themselves schedule special parties during the Safari. Popular bands show up along Main Street playing crowd favorites. Shag dance instructors offer classes to anyone seeking to improve their skill or increase their repertoire of moves.

But the big attraction is the night life. As the sun goes down the Safari animals come out to play in the clubs along Main Street. Old friends seek each other out and new friends are made. The nights are spent shag dancing to timeless music that moves body and soul. On the last Saturday of the Safari, everyone meets on Main Street for the parade of the year, the ACSC Club’s Parade. ACSC member clubs plan, design, and build parade floats for fun and a chance to win one of the coveted awards. There are award categories for best shag theme & most original float. The Spring Safari Parade always draws a huge crowd. Not only will the shaggers be out in force, but the beach locals stream to the streets for an afternoon of fun!

The Blessing of the Inlet

The Blessing of the Inlet at Belin United Methodist Church is an annual festival filled with worship, food, fun and fellowship, highlighted by a ‘Blessing Ceremony”. And the Blessing of the Inlet generates funds for many missions, charities and non-profit organizations. The festival has grown to include a day of entertainment, more than 100 arts and crafts vendors, various Murrells Inlet restaurants and local food purveyors, children’s play area and fun events. The entertainment schedule is packed with outstanding groups featuring gospel choirs, dance groups, contemporary Christian music and much more. The festival is highlighted by the Blessing of the Inlet ceremony which starts at 11:30 am and is administered by the Rev. Dr. Mike Alexander and Rev. Walter Cantwell. After the ceremony, all visitors are invited to “Stay and Pray” in the sanctuary. The festival is a free event with no admission or parking charge. The Rivertown Music and Beer Festival

The 14 th Annual Mayfest on Main® Festival will be held on Main Street, Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. This one day rain or shine event brings approximately 15,000 to celebrate May and the beginning of summer. Along Main Street, approximately 100 crafters will display their crafts, food vendors will serve a variety of treats, and children will be entertained with a kids’ area. The 38th Annual World Famous Blue Crab Festival
