Farmer’s Market on Deville Street

May 6 – Sept 30, Saturdays, 10 am – 3 pm

After experiencing a Taste of the Market Common, stop by the Farmer’s Market on Deville Street and take home some of the area’s fresh, locally grown produce and some of the area’s locally caught seafood for Sunday dinner. Stock up on baked goods, vegetables, fruits, flowers, plants, crafts, jams, jellies, pet treats and much more. The market operates every Saturday beginning May 6 through September 30 from 10am-3 pm. The Market Common and the Waccamaw Market Cooperative are the sponsors of the farmer’s market.

Just a short drive south of The Market Common is Murrells Inlet. Once the lair of the infamous pirate Blackbeard, Murrells Inlet is now widely known as the ‘Seafood Capital of South Carolina’ and is an ideal place to explore the outdoors. A half-mile long marsh-walk offers spectacular views and a chance to watch fishing boats come in with the days’ catch, be it fresh fish, shrimp, clams, oysters, or crabs pulled from the surrounding waters.

Murrells Inlet is also home to some of the nation’s finest golf courses. The area maintains the quaint feel of a true fishing village, unspoiled by concrete and high rises. It’s a place sought out by fisherman and naturalists, whispered about by antique collectors, and revered by art lovers and horticulturists. Home to Brook Green Gardens and the peaceful Marsh Walk, it’s the place where golfers come to relax, families come to dine, and snowbirds come to retire. It is a friendly community that you would be proud to call home.

Brookgreen Gardens

May 3, 10, 17 & 24, Every Wednesday

Known worldwide for its beauty, Brookgreen Gardens showcases its extensive American sculpture collection with the best nature has to offer. Founded by Archer and Anna Huntington in 1931, Brookgreen Gardens was their gift to the community they loved. Today it is a National Historic Landmark with one of the most significant collections of figurative sculpture, by American artists, in an outdoor setting in the world. Visitors will always find something in bloom, no matter what the season and the zoo offers an up-close look at local wildlife.

Directly across the highway lies Huntington Beach State Park, originally a part of the Huntington’s estate and now a must-see for the serious bird watcher. Huntington Beach State Park is considered one of the best birding locations along the East Coast.  This 2500 acre park also offers ocean-side camping, fishing and nature programs along the three miles of beach and hundreds of acres of salt marsh. This was also the summer residence of the Huntington’s and their castle-like home, Atalaya, is open for exploration daily.

Every Wednesday in May – 3, 10, 17 & 24 (no 5/31), Ron Daise, Vice-president for Creative Education at Brookgreen Gardens and Gullah descendant, will present an entertaining and informative program about the culture, food, language, and history of the Gullah- Geechee people.

The Gullah are a distinctive group of African-Americans whose origins lie along the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia, as well as the adjacent sea islands. They live in small farming and fishing units, having formed a tightly knit community that has survived slavery, the Civil War, and the emergence of modern American culture.

Due to their geographic location and strong sense of community, the Gullah have been able to preserve more of their African cultural heritage than any other group of African Americans: they speak a creole language similar to the Krio of Sierra Leone, are skilled in the creation of African style handicrafts and enjoy a rich cuisine based primarily on rice. The origin and traditions of this group are an important piece of South Carolina’s historical puzzle. By exploring their history and development, one gains a fuller picture of South Carolina’s past. The program will be in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium and is free with garden admission.
