17th Annual Myrtle Beach Mustang Week

Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand has become almost synonymous with car and motorcycle shows. This year’s 17th Annual Myrtle Beach Mustang Week rolls into town the first week in September.

It’s time to clean up the pony car and head for the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. It’s the ultimate opportunity for Mustang lovers to enjoy the conventional car show set up outside the Convention Center, while inside, spectators and participants can enjoy a true Mustang Week trade show. Sponsors, vendors, and industry professionals will be available to talk one-on-one with participants and spectators about new industry trends as well as get some great deals on some of the hottest new products.  

Last year’s show brought a sell-out crowd of more than 700 cars in the judged show and a few more than 10,000 spectators!  The car show is open to all years of Ford-powered Mustangs and SVT vehicles. Spectators and participants have anYou will have an opportunity to see everything from the mild to the wild and from classic Ponies to late models just off the showroom floor!!

26th Annual St. John’s Greek Festival

The annual St. John’s Greek Festival is a celebration of Greek culture, cuisine, and family fun. The Greek Festival is one of the most beloved Myrtle Beach events of the fall.

Sure, there’s Greek culture, Greek music, and Greek dancing but it’s impossible to mention the festival without talking about the yummy Greek food. Guests get their fill of spanakopita, gyros, baklava, cookies, salads, pastries, breads and more as St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church hosts this tasty annual event. The event is fun for the whole family and offers inflatables, live performances and music, arts &  crafts and vendor tables, and tours of the beautiful church. But for most, food is the main attraction. It’s hard to resist the hundreds of pastries but the traditional lamb or chicken gyros on fresh pita with tzatziki sauce, Greek spices, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions are perhaps the most commonly ordered meal.

The moussaka and pastichio offer a taste of the Greek life. Mousaka is a favorite eggplant casserole with layers of ground beef, cheese, potatoes in a cream sauce. Pastichio is an interesting classic dish with ground beef, cinnamon, nutmeg and a cream sauce inside of baked macaroni. Regardless of your favorite entrée, don’t miss the roasted Greek potatoes and Greek salad to accompany it!

Still hungry but not ready for dessert? Move on to the spanikopita or tiropita. Both made with cream cheese, egg and filo pastry. Spanikopita is made with fresh spinach so classify it as a vegetable if you’d like. The Dolmathes are stuffed grape leaves and are hand-rolled perfection.

Authentic Greek beer and imported wines wash down the best of any festival lunch and dinner are available. Ouzo shots are sold at the event if you really want a taste of Greek liquor. Ouzo is a Greek wine aged in green pine barrels and has a unique and distinctive taste.

The Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival is an annual event at Huntington Beach State Park. The festival is filled with unique arts and crafts. Featuring more than 100 of the finest regional artisans, the Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival provides aesthetic beauty against a background of natural beauty. Enjoy fine art, quality crafts, and food, along with the musical offerings of several of the area’s best musicians. Visitors are treated to live music by local musicians on an outdoor stage in the courtyard. The courtyard is also the setting for the food court with seafood, barbecue, and other culinary delights.

The three-day festival is hosted in Atalaya, the former home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. The Moorish-style winter home and sculpture studio were built during the Great Depression by the New York philanthropists and hosts the annual event of artists and their work. The oceanfront park offers camping, fishing, and pristine beaches.

The festival spotlights the park’s natural beauty and the amenities offered to visitors year-round. Located along U.S. 17 in Murrells Inlet, Huntington Beach State Park offers several hundred thousand visitors a year one of the most pristine beaches on the Grand Strand. The 2,500-acre park’s freshwater lagoon, salt marsh, and maritime forest are outstanding examples of the state’s natural coastal environment. Huntington Beach State Park is widely regarded as one of the best birding sites along the East Coast. Its natural history is highlighted in the park’s environmental education center.

15th Annual Irish Italian Festival

The City of North Myrtle Beach will host the 15th Annual Irish Italian International Festival on Saturday, September 29, 2018. This one day rain or shine event brings approximately 15,000 to celebrate different cultures. The festival begins at 10:00 a.m. and continues until 4:00 p.m. on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach and features food from local restaurants, two stages of live entertainment, street performers, art & craft vendors, and Irish and Italian dance groups. Restaurants will compete for the title of Best Entrée, Best Decorated, and Best Dessert.

A children’s area will offer a variety of entertainment that suits all ages including rides, inflatables and more (nominal fee).

Festival-goers can also enjoy Claudio’s friendly spaghetti eating competition sponsored by Villa Romana! First to clear their plate (without using their hands) wins bragging rights and a stylish plaque.

Individuals may sign up at the Info Booth between 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. at the festival. No entry fee. Once registered, participants should arrive at the Hillside Drive Stage by 2 p.m. Contest begins at about 2:00 p.m. at the Hillside Drive Stage (400 Main Street – in front of Hope Taylor & Co.).

Mark your calendars for the 6th annual Brew at the Zoo. The event, held at Brookgreen Gardens’ Lowcountry Zoo, will feature more than 30 craft beers from around the region and around the country. Guests can sample beers and appetizers while live entertainment from The Paul Grimshaw Band will play throughout the zoo. There’ll also be a silent auction to benefit new projects.

During Brew at the Zoo, only the Lowcountry Zoo area will be open, but Brookgreen’s general admission ticket is good for 7-days and memberships that include an annual pass, are also available. Brookgreen Gardens is open 9:30 – 5:00 p.m. daily.

Registered as a National Historic Landmark, Brookgreen Gardens is a wonder of native flora, fauna, and American sculpture. Considered by many to be the jewel of the Grand Strand, Brookgreen Gardens delighted visitors since its creation in 1931 by Anne and Archer Huntington. Located off Highway 17 in Murrells Inlet, the entrance is distinctively marked by the larger-than-life sculpture Fighting Stallions, by Anna Hyatt Huntington.

On approximately 300 acres among the nine-thousand lush acres of South Carolina history and Lowcountry landscapes that is the entire property, visitors will find the most significant collection of figurative sculpture by American artists in the world. At Brookgreen Gardens you will learn about the rice plantations of the 1800s and the Gullah culture of the enslaved Africans who worked them.

In the Lowcountry Zoo, guests see animals in scenic enclosures that respect the animals and respect the surrounding environment. Kids of all ages can enjoy the Butterfly House and the Peace Garden Room for Children as well as the garden’s fountains, reflecting pools, and hidden pathways. Children will also enjoy the Enchanted Storybook Forest and Children’s Sensory Trail, adjacent to the Butterfly house.

There are plenty of open, green spaces to lay back and watch the clouds go by at Brookgreen Gardens, and two picnic areas.  If you don’t want to bring a snack, three dining options are available. Guests can explore most of what Brookgreen Gardens has to offer on foot, but there are also tours deep into the nature preserve areas available for an additional price, either on a creek excursion aboard a 48-foot pontoon boat, the Trekker excursion or The Oaks Plantation excursion.
