September isn’t too early to begin holiday shopping. Myrtle Beach is famous for its amazing real estate and the Grand Strand with its 60 miles of clean white sandy beaches, but Myrtle Beach is almost as famous for its flea markets and craft fairs. The best ones are in the fall. Here’s a couple to put on September’s calendar.

7th Annual Seacoast Artists Guild Art in Common Fall Festival

September 21st and September 22nd, 2019, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm 

Valor Memorial Garden, The Market Common, 1120 Farrow Parkway, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 29588

Each year, the Seacoast Artists Guild sponsor two artist’s festivals across the street from the Guild’s Market Common gallery in Valor Memorial Garden. This year’s fall festival, the 7th Annual Seacoast Artists Guild Art in Common will be September 21st & 22nd, 2019 from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM both days. The festival offers a wide range of handcrafted items including photography, drawings, painted arts, jewelry, pottery, stone, wood and glass, crafted by fifty (50) talented local and regional artists. The event will be held rain or shine, and the admission is free. The event is Pet and Child friendly.

The Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 27, 28, and 29, 2019, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

When they’re not selling Myrtle Beach real estate, many of the Keller Williams The Trembley Group Realtors and real estate professionals can be found with their families at Huntington Beach State Park. It is one of the Grand Strand’s treasures.

In addition to miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, Huntington Beach State Park is home to Atalaya, the summer home of Anna and Archer Huntington. 

The grounds and building are open daily. The park offers one-hour guided tours during the busier summer season. During the off-season, visitors are on their own. The guided tour is well worth the time, and the Atalaya docents bring the Atalaya castle to life.

Archer Huntington was the wealthy son of one of the country’s original robber barons and Anna was a famous sculptor. They bought the property, which includes the current Huntington State Park and Brookgreen Gardens, in 1930. The entire extent of their purchase extended over more than 9,000 acres and included forest, swamp, rice fields, and beachfront. They planned to build a winter home that overlooked the ocean.

They chose to call their new home Atalaya, the Spanish name for watchtower. Archer was a Spanish historian, and he designed the house after Mediterranean coastline Moorish architecture.

The house and grounds include more than 30 rooms around a large enclosed courtyard in the center of the property. The courtyard and surrounding grounds are the home to several annual festivals.

At the end of September every year, Atalaya is the centerpiece for the multi-day Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival. Over 100 local and regional artisans show and sell their work. The festival also offers local “Lowcountry” cuisine from numerous vendors. In keeping with the festival’s local culture theme, local musicians provide music for entertainment.

There is a fee for entry into the festival, and you can pay for one-day entry or a multi-day pass. Admissions are $10 for adults and children 15 and under are free, while park admission is free during the event.

2019 The Horry-Georgetown Homebuilders Fall Home Show

Friday and Saturday, September 20 and 21, 2019, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

Admission is $5 for adults and children under 16 are free. Three-day passes are available for $10.

16th Annual Irish Italian International Festival

One of the best parts of living in Myrtle Beach and owning Myrtle Beach real estate is the opportunity to experience a wide variety of cultures. Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand population growth benefits from people from the north who want to sell their houses and buy Myrtle Beach real estate to get out of the snow. Actually, 90% of all Myrtle Beach population growth comes from former northerners who moved to Myrtle Beach the weather, for retirement, and jobs. They came and bought Myrtle Beach real estate because property taxes are very low, particularly compared with states in the Northeast. A resident of Myrtle Beach is far more likely to have a neighbor from Connecticut, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Great Britain, France, or Italy than a native South Carolinian.

The City of North Myrtle Beach will celebrate the area’s cultural diversity by playing host to the 16th Annual Irish Italian International Festival on Saturday, September 28. This one-day, rain or shine event brings approximately 15,000 to celebrate different cultures. The festival is from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. It features food from local restaurants, two stages of live entertainment, street performers, art & craft vendors, and dance groups all with an Irish Italian International theme. Restaurants will compete for the title of Best Entrée, Best Decorated, and Best Dessert. Festival-goers can also join in a friendly spaghetti eating competition.

Villa Romana sponsors the Claudio’s Spaghetti Eating Contest. Those with a big appetite can enter the contest at the Info Booth between 10:00 AM and 1:45 PM. The contest starts at 2:00 PM. The first to clear their plate wins bragging rights and a classy plaque. The only condition for winning the classy plaque is participants cannot use their hands.

Celebrating the Shag in South Carolina

The Carolina Shag is the state dance of South Carolina and has been since 1984. For more than a half-century, the Shag has been synonymous with warm sand, cold beer, and beach music. A form of Southern swing, it is said to have begun along the Grand Strand in Myrtle Beach in the 1920s. The Shag’s smooth rhythm and gliding steps may have begun as an adaptation to avoid kicking up sand. (or as some suggest, to limit upper body movement to help prevent spilled drinks!)

Over the years, the Shag has become a South Carolina institution with a devoted following. Numerous organizations have developed to support and promote the dance that is such a large part of the Myrtle Beach and the South Carolina culture.

On September 14, The Market Common will celebrate the Shag with a Shag (the movie) 30th Anniversary Celebration Dinner will be held Saturday, September 14th, from 7 – 9 PM. Shag, the motion picture made and set in Myrtle Beach, SC, has been voted by the readers of the Southern lifestyle magazine and Garden & Gun magazine, as one of the Best Movie Made in the South. The movie is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019.

Shag is about four girls from Spartanburg, S.C., who sneak away from their proper homes for a weekend at Myrtle Beach. The big spring festival promises a dance contest, beer blasts, and lots of cute boys. During the weekend, one of the girls falls in love, one decides to go for her dream, one decides not to marry the slug she’s engaged to, and the other will take off her glasses to find that she isn’t homely after all. The movie is great fun with its innocence, conviction, pre-Beatles soundtrack, and the big 1950s cars.

The Market Common will welcome guests to Tupelo Honey, 3042 Howard Avenue, at The Market Common, Myrtle Beach’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment destination. They will enjoy upscale southern fare while hearing the story behind the making of the motion picture. Those in attendance who were in the movie will be acknowledged. The delightful evening will culminate with a private screening of the film. An all-inclusive ticket that includes the private screening, dinner, tax, and tip is $25. A cash bar will be available.

For non-locals in town to look at Myrtle Beach Real Estate, The Shag Celebration is the perfect way to learn a little about the local culture and Myrtle Beach history. Music at the Farm

W. Paul Living History Farm, Hwy. 701 North and Harris Short Cut Road, Conway, SC.

Visitors to the L.W. Paul Living History Farm have an opportunity to experience life on the “one horse farm” as it was in Horry County from 1900-1955. The L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family. The farm is free and open to the public. For more information, call the L. W. Guided Farm tours available every Saturday at 10:00 AM, excluding annual Farm Events and County holidays. Tours are free and will last approximately one hour.

Larry Paul, a local businessman with a rich farming heritage in Horry County, offered to fund the construction of a family farm to depict farm and domestic life in Horry County from 1900-1955. Mr. Paul’s vision was to provide Horry County and the museum with a facility to educate future generations about life in Horry County during the first half of the twentieth century. In 2006, Horry County Council designated 17 acres of land for use by the Horry County Museum as the L. W. Paul Living History Farm.

Visitors to the Farm have the opportunity to sample the everyday life of an Horry County farm family living during this era. Guests on this working farm will be able to observe activities that would have been commonplace on traditional family farms.

Events at the Farm change with the seasons so check in on us throughout the year to see what’s happening here. A few of September’s events include a cooking demonstration, a harvest day program, an organic gardening program, wash day demonstration, and farm animal day program.

Music at the Farm is a monthly event that features a real country music jam session by local musicians. Country music does not refer to pop-country out of Nashville. In this case, country music refers to bluegrass, Appalachian folk and Western music, and blues. Visitors can sit and listen or for brave visitors interested in bringing their banjos or fiddles and joining in they can call (843) 365-3596 for details. Music at the Farm is suitable for all ages and is free and open to the public. It’s a wonderful way to spend a September Saturday afternoon.
