Here are four tips to help get your kids excited about your upcoming move.

We often work with homebuyer parents relocating to our area, and unfortunately, a common problem they deal with is their kids not being on board with the move.

If you’re planning a move and have younger kids, as I do, it’s important to find little ways to get them excited about the move. My parents only moved a handful of times when my siblings and I were kids, but they were great at getting us involved with the process and introducing us to new houses and neighborhoods.

Here are a few tips you can try when doing the same thing:

1. Drive around the neighborhood. Maybe take them out for ice cream, then drive them through the new neighborhood and talk about all the things they’ll be able to do in the new house.

2. Play games. For example, have them guess how far it is to the library or school—the winner gets a prize!

3. Have them sign a “promise note.” In other words, the note says that if they’re on board with the move and help mom and dad throughout the process, they get a treat when all is said and done.

4. Respect their feelings. This is the most important tip to remember. Too often, adults make the mistake of bulldozing over how their kids feel about a move. Try to get them involved as much as possible. If you do that, they’re more likely to be a big help along the way.
