August! Summer is coming to an end. In most parts of the country, school is back in session. There are fewer kids on the beach and in the restaurants, but there’s still plenty of vacationers, and everything is still open. The Horry County Museum
The Horry County Museum was established in 1979 and opened its doors to the public in 1981. The Museum focuses on the history, prehistory, and natural history of Horry County, S.C., and educates the public about these subjects through exhibits, outreach programs, and events. In 2009, the Museum opened the L. W. Paul Living History Farm. The Farm is a recreation of life on a one horse family farm between the years of 1900-1955. Visitors to the farm can experience what life was like in a farm community during those years and attend quarterly events at the Farm. In 2014, the Museum moved into the renovated 1905 Burroughs School. The school is on the National Register of Historic Places. The move included increased exhibits, a freshwater aquarium that was featured on Animal Planet’s hit reality show “Tanked”, and a 600 seat auditorium that hosts public presentations and programs.

Incident at Mars Bluff

The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series includes a short documentary film on a little known bit of Horry County history. This 30-minute film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, explores how the world’s most technologically advanced airpower came to drop a three-ton nuclear device on a small town in South Carolina. Interviews with the surviving members of the Gregg family reveals how the incident affected them then and to this day. Additional interviews with surviving crew members, Air Force personnel, Mars Bluff residents and Cold War historians will shed light on the incident and provide local, national and international perspectives to the world’s first nuclear blunder.
The 1958 Mars Bluff B-47 nuclear weapon loss incident was an inadvertent nuclear weapon release over Mars Bluff, South Carolina, during 1958. The bomb, which lacked a nuclear core, fell over the area, causing damage to buildings below. Six people were injured by the explosion of the bomb’s conventional explosive trigger. The United States Air Force (USAF) was sued by the family of the victims, who received $54,000, equivalent to $468,934 in 2019.
On March 11, 1958, a U.S. Air Force Boeing B-47E-LM Stratojet from Hunter Air Force Base near Savannah, Georgia, took off at approximately 4:34 PM and was scheduled to fly to the United Kingdom. The aircraft was carrying nuclear weapons on board in the event of war with the Soviet Union breaking out. One of the Stratojet’s officers mistakenly grabbed the emergency release pin and the nuclear bomb dropped through the bomb bay doors, sending the bomb 15,000 ft. down to the ground below.
A playhouse was struck by the bomb. Its conventional high explosives trigger detonated, destroying the playhouse and leaving a crater about 70 feet wide and 35 feet deep. Fortunately, the nuclear core was stored elsewhere on the aircraft. All three girls were injured by the explosion, as were the girl’s father, mother, and son. Seven nearby buildings were damaged. The incident made domestic and international headlines. The crater is still present today, although overgrown by vegetation, and is marked by a historical marker. Access to the site is limited because it is located on private property with no public access road.
The Horry County Museum’s film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 28th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Visitors to the Horry County Museum operated farm have the opportunity to sample the everyday life of a Horry County farm family living during this era. Guests on the working farm are able to observe activities that would have been commonplace on traditional family farms. Events at the Farm change with the seasons so check the farm’s website throughout the year to see what’s happening. As the farm year progresses events and demonstrations change to interpret the activities that take place on the Farm annually.
Traditional Music at the Farm
Enjoy a traditional music demonstration at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm on Saturday, August 17th. Wayne Skipper will discuss the places local musicians would play in the rural farming community in the early 1900s. Wayne is joined by a variety of musicians playing fiddles, guitars, squeezeboxes, and harmonicas for a tradition music jam session. The program starts at 1:00 PM and runs until 3:30 PM and is free and open to the public.
The L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. Myrtle Beach and Grand Strand Farmers Markets
South Carolina has about 25,000 farms which encompass about 4.9 million acres. Forests cover two-thirds of the land in the state. Agriculture has been the base of South Carolina’s economy since the settlement of the American colonies. The Native Americans grew beans, pumpkins, onions, melons, and maize, and British colonists brought indigo, cotton, tobacco, ginger root, cattle, and hogs.
Today, between crops and livestock, South Carolina agriculture is worth $3 billion annually. Myrtle Beach and Grand Strand residents don’t have to drive too far west to find South Carolina farms.
